The owners of this traditional Fulham family home had a problem. Clutter. And lots of horizontal surfaces to put it on. Initially Design Penguin was called in to propose a storage solution. After a number of consultations, the family agreed to completely redesign the room, adding the required storage with a new colour palette for the entire space, better AV, new furniture, upholstery and lighting.
The small cupboards and shelving were completely redesigned as full height units. Inside, each section was allocated to the needs of a family member, housing office materials, baking equipment, AV and arts & crafts. The mantle and unused gas fire were replaced with a more contemporary approach, spotlights installed and the TV mounted properly. The new look is streamlined and fresh, with the subtle colour scheme also used in the kitchen.
The unusual shape of the corner of the room was used as a new focal point, with redesigned upholstery and lighting forming a reading nook. The existing exposed brickwork was retained and re-lit as an original feature, and new contemporary dining furniture installed. To discourage younger members of the family from using them as a new clutter zone, the new shelves were were filled with recipe books, handily positioned for the reading nook.
