Contemporary Cottage Snug

Over time this country cottage snug had become neglected, outdated and disused, with old fashioned fake beams, draughty windows and a layout that didn’t work at all well for the young couple who called it home.

With a brief to retain the original features while creating a contemporary, warm space, we started by ripping out the fake beams and crumbling plasterboard walls. The room was then insulated, replastered, rewired, and a surround sound cinema system, cast iron radiator and new hardwood sash windows were installed. The beautiful parquet floor was repaired, cleaned and polished, and the original stone lintel and clome oven were cleaned and exposed to create a feature fireplace.

A dark colour scheme added drama, offset by bright contemporary furniture, a lacquered coffee table and gold feature lighting. The layout was changed to create a cosy space for relaxing or entertaining guests, and a comfortable cinema room for the couple on cold winter nights. The windows were then dressed simply with black and gold roman blinds. As a finishing touch, a bespoke shelving unit and logstore was created in black and gold, with textured plaster backlit to highlight the reclaimed letters from an old branch of Woolworths.
