Building on a successful career in marketing and business consultancy, Nicola set up Design Penguin in 2015 to bring a fresh, creative, no nonsense approach to the industry. She trained at the British Academy of Interior Design (postgraduate diploma) and honed her skills working for specialist furniture designers and manufacturers. After collaborating with Michael from a distance on several London and Cornish projects, she has now moved her life, small brown dog and the interior design practice to the West Country, based in the Tamar Valley. She loves helping clients to improve their homes, and seeing how changing the way a space looks also transforms the way it is used and how it feels.
Prior to following his passion for interiors Michael worked with artists for 20 years creating works in churches, canals, lidos, pubs and clubs as well as the more usual theatre and gallery spaces. While doing this, Michael would fall asleep each night metaphorically knocking down walls and redesigning rooms, dreaming of creating beautiful spaces. Taking on his own wreck 10 years ago in the guise of three miners cottages, Michael has transformed the entire building. Applying his creative and project management skills to working with Design Penguin was an easy decision to make, and allowing the dream to become a reality for others gives him great satisfaction.
